Atsu begins her journey in Ghost of Yotei with a horse with no name, but players can actually change that. Those familiar with Ghost of Tsushima will remember how Jin bonded with his horse, and could even name it so that the bond was further sealed. Luckily, Ghost of Yotei also allows players to pick their horse and choose its name, but doing so isn’t as standard as it was in the previous game. Below, players will find out exactly how they can swap their horse for a new one and give it a chosen name.
How to Get a Different Horse in Ghost of Yotei
To start, players will need to unlock the “Old Trails” quest. To activate the Old Trails quest, return to Atsu’s home in the Yotei Grasslands by Lake Shikotsu. Once here, hold the Touch Pad to enter into the past where you will be playing as a child version of Atsu. To the right of the entrance, you will find Atsu’s brother digging in the dirt. You can now interact with Atsu’s brother to start dialogue between the two twins, where Atsu will mention how their father will take her to the stables. After which, you can hold the Touch Pad again to return to the present with the Old Trails quest unlocked. You can equip this quest from the Map with the D-Pad.
Now, head to the Old Stables, found in the southeast region of Shikotsu Woods. Travel far west from Atsu’s home to find the Old Stables, where you will come across two villains abusing a horse. By killing these enemies, you can follow the horse back to the Old Stables, but upon arriving, you will see they’re empty, and a Settler remains. Speak with the Settler to begin a combat encounter with Saito’s Outlaws. After they’ve been dealt with, return to the Settler and follow him into an open field, which will trigger a flashback with Atsu and her father.
From here, you need to track the horses with Atsu’s father, which is achieved by looking at the horse manure and following the muddy path to the right until you find a cliff that must be climbed. Once at the top, use the Whistle with Left on the D-Pad, and then you’ll return to the present with a choice of three horses:
- White (current horse)
- Black
- Dappler
The horse does not have different stats, so players can pick whatever horse they like the look of the most. However, it’s worth noting that once you select a horse, you will not be able to swap, meaning you are locked into having the chosen horse with you for your entire journey. After selecting a horse, you can choose its name with Triangle, Circle, or X, and upon confirming the name, you will have a new horse and the “Naming a Friend” Bronze Trophy!
You can return to the Old Stables to visit the horses that you did not select, and even speak with them to see how they’re doing!
How to Summon Your Horse in Ghost of Yotei
To summon your horse in Ghost of Yotei, hit Left on the D-Pad. This will see Atsu whistle, and your horse will then spawn behind you. The horse is also invincible, so feel free to ride it through dangerous terrain without risking its health, and you won’t need to feed it. However, that doesn’t mean you should mistreat the poor creature!
